Blocked

Hi folks,

Okay, we’ve spent a few weeks on cliffhangers, now I want to have a go at writer’s block.  No, don’t try to deny it, it’s real and we all get it once in a while.  Sometimes it gets bad, sometimes scary, “Will I ever write again?  Come on, characters, talk to me, what’s with the silent treatment?”

So, what do you do about it?

Me?  I have several tactics I use, but here’s my favorite, a three fold battle plan to get the juices going again.  One, I play Skyrim and World of Warcraft a lot. Two, I keep note books handy for when those errand strokes of brilliance occur, make notes, write snippets, even a paragraph or two, and read some of my older notes.  Three, I re-read my favorite books that I’ve written.  Why?  It tells me I can do it and do it well, it helps me find my voice again, and it stimulates my imagination.

So, that works for me.  Every block is usually followed with a successful novel that just rolled off the keyboard with ease.  Most notable recently is SUVI, my most successful novel so far.   SUVI appeared after a three month block that nearly drove me mad.  Here’s where to find her:

So, what do you do?  How do you, my fellow writers, cope with the dreaded block?

No Cliffhangers

Hi folks,

Life has kept me away from the computer a lot lately, but what can you do?  Okay, we were discussing chiffhangers last time.  I’m still getting feedback on that one, and the overwhelming majority of readers agree they hate them.

I agree, for I believe that when I publish a book I enter into a contract with the reader.  My part of the deal is to tell a full story.  Yes, there can be a few hints of further adventures to come, but I will always finish the story I’m telling you, the book will bring every major issue to a satisfactory conclusion.

So, on that note, for those of you who have yet to read it, I offer up SUVI.  Book one of three. (So far, book four is well under way.)  Check out SUVI, I promise you a full and enjyable story.  Here’s where to find it:

So, back to work for me.  See you next time.

More on Cliffhangers

Hi folks,

For the past few weeks I’ve been conducting a loose poll about how readers and writers feel about cliffhangers.   I did it in a way that allowed folks to express an opinion, not just say yes or no.  The results were interesting, to say the least.

The overwhelming majority of folks who checked in (over 76) aren’t impressed with cliffhangers at the end of a book, TV show, or Movie.  Most say it’s a cheat, many refuse to follow along and abandon the series, or wait until it’s been completed then binge on it.  They are okay with, and even enjoy, a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter, but not at the end of a book.  Many were quite passionate about how much they hate them.

Some people seemed to be okay with them, or at least don’t seem to mind them so much.  There were even a few who were quite passionate about how much they love cliffhangers.  Nine, actually.  I checked, they’re all writers.

They say cliffhangers increase sales, the results here would seem to deny that statement.

As for me, I’ve never liked them, they irritate me.  If you’re telling me a story, finish it, dang it.  I’m okay, and so are a lot of readers, with leaving a few hints of things to come, but finish the main thread of the book.

So, there  it is, the people have spoken.  Cliffhangers won’t be appearing in any of my books.  Yes, there may be more for the characters to do in future stories, but each book will come to a satisfactory conclusion…. and that concludes this post. tee hee

Happy Reading

Cliffhangers

Hi folks,

I’d seriously like your opinion on cliffhangers.  Now, I have no problem with a long story arc that continues over several books, TV episodes, or movie series, but I have to say, this trend of ending every book , episode, or movie with a cliffhanger really rubs my fur the wrong way.

As you know, when I write a series there is a long story arc, but each book in the series ends with a resolution to the current problem for the main characters.  Yes, they know there will be more to face, but for the moment all is well, the reader can catch a breather before heading into the next adventure.

The Children of the Goddess series is a prime example of what I’m saying.  That one begins here:

Personally, if a book I’m reading ends in a cliffhanger I’ll toss it and not read the rest of the series.

So, what are your thoughts on this?  Don’t be shy, tell me what you think, as a writer I kinda need to know this stuff, right?

Until next time

Forgotten Worlds

In the year of 2221, old Earth reckoning, the first of the five great ships set out.  Each ship carried ten thousand settlers, all highly skilled, extremely intelligent, people who were anxious to extend mankind’s reach into the galaxy.

They all believed they would be in constant contact with the rest of the colonies, but that’s not what happened. Soon after the third ship was launched, a war devastated Earth.  The last two ships barely made it into open space.   The last humans in existence are out there, somewhere.  These are some of their stories.

You can find them here:                             SUVI on Amazon

JAKE on Amazon

The odyssey continues as our poor forgotten species  seeks a new home, and all too often find only another forgotten world.

And on that note, I’ll get back to work.

Until next time.

The SUVI, Mankind’s Next Step

Humans have reached out to colonize distant planets, they had no real idea what could go wrong, but they soon learned.  The colony was decimated by an indigenous species they knew nothing about, and by a virus that species carried.  That virus tried to rewrite the human DNA, to make the host better able to survive, for the most part it failed.  Of the thousands infected, nineteen managed to survive.  They are the SUVI, survivor of unknown viral infection.  Their story begins here:

These three books document the struggles and adventures as the SUVI and the last surviving humans escape the planet and set out to find another home.  They will face many more adventures before they find that which they seek, if they ever do.

So, I’ll leave you with this and get back to work on the next SUVI story.

Until next time

First Step Into 2019

Hi Folks,

In my last post I gave you a glimpse into 2018.  A tough year, for a lot of people, me included, but not all bad.  My new series, Forgotten Worlds, is doing well.  Now, here’s the third book in the series, just out.  Jake.

On a long abandoned world a man comes to terms with some hard realities of life, it isn’t fair.  Here he must face his demons and try to live up to his own codes, his sense of himself.  Shipwrecked on an abandoned planet, injured, and facing unknown dangers, Jake must find a way to survive. Worse yet, his only companion is a super-powered alien woman who cannot function without others of her kind nearby. This is no place for a man who has lived all his life on a spaceship. Wait, what was that in the shadows?

Jake is just out and already has picked up some great reviews.  With no modesty at all I say, this is probably my best work ever.  So, get your copy today and I’ll get back to trying to top it.  Happy reading.

Until next time

2018 In Review

Hi folks,

This isn’t a review of the world at large in 2018, it’s a quick look back from my world before leaping forward into 2019.  2018 was a year of big ups and downs.  on the up side, my Forgotten Worlds series brought me more success as a writer than I’ve achieved in many years.

Amazon

On the down side, in late August my beloved companion suffered two major heart attacks.  She managed to beat the odds and survive, but it has been touch and go for months since the first event.  As a result, I’ve been writing far less than usual as I’ve been spending as much time with my lady love as I possibly can.  This in turn has placed a financial strain on the family.  sigh.  It is what it is.

However, having said that, all is not lost.  Lady K is finally doing a lot better and we have hope for a long future together.  Also, I’ve finally finished the third book in the Forgotten Worlds series.  Personally, I think JAKE is my best work ever.  Here’s a peek at what’s inside.

Excerpt from JAKE:

Twenty threw the rest of their fuel onto the small blaze.  “We need more heat to cook this right, I just hope it lasts long enough.”

As the flames rose a bit higher there was a rumble deep beneath them.  “What was that?”

“Don’t know, Jake, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

“Keep the weapons close.”

Nothing more happened for several moments, then they heard a soft hiss.  Jake turned the meat he was cooking then sniffed at it.  It smelled good and he was ravenous, then he heard a second hiss above them.  “Ah for fuck sake, you’re kidding me.  Dammit it all to hell.  Come on, Twenty, let’s move.”

He surged to his feet, clutching his portion of meat as he hurried toward the exit.  <Door open.>  “Come on, Twenty, hurry.”

“Jake, what the …”  She suddenly shrieked as foul-smelling water began to drip down on her.  She grabbed her pack, and clutching her cooked meat close, raced for the door.  Outside, sputtering and swearing, she shook the muck from her hair and eyes.  “What the actual hell?”

“Sprinkler system.”

“You’re kidding me.”

“Nope.  I guess our little fire triggered it.  Meat seems to be cooked though.”

So there you go, a peek at the next SUVI story.  There’s a few surprises in this one, so keep an eye out for it.

Until next time,
