Working Alone?

Hi folks,

It occured to me today that, oddly enough, I’m not the only one who works at home … alone.  So many writers, and artists do so as well.  For the most part it’s a good thing as it gives us the opportunity to let out creative imaginations fly free.

However, as so many of you also know, it’s not like that every day.  Some days it’s like this:

Yeah, and other days it worse.   I don’t know about any of you, but I’m willing to bet that, like me, some days some of you’d kill for some adult company, even if for just a chat over tea, anything to see another human face.

I’m lucky, my lady love will soon close her shop in the city and move everything to her home studio, but for today, I’m sulking. (Writer’s block sucks, perhaps I’ll switch to knitting for today.)

I could be wrong, I guess.  How about you?  Any of you ever get like that?

Messing With It

Hey folks,

Well, I’m here to tell you, boredom can make you do strange things.  In my own case it caused me to do something I thought I’d never do.  I messed with my website.  When I first had it built it was a thing of beauty, but, over time WordPress updated this and that and not everything behaved like it was supposed to.  So I broke down and messed with it.

So, here’s where I ask you to take a poke around, see what you like, what you don’t, and let me know which is which.  All feedback is greatly appreciated.  Here’s the page for one of my favorites, start there.

Okay, back to the writing stuff.  I’m currently working on the latest novel in the Children of the Wild series.  With any luck at all you’ll get to see it in February.

As Promised, It’s Here!

Hi folks,

Well, my last post gave you an idea of what was coming.  Now you can see for yourself.  Deliberate Love is here, and here’s how to find it.  Give it a read and let me know what you think of the whole concept.

The Book

So, there we are, the second of the (self-help) books. hehehe

On to other news, we’re hoping to have a new installment in the Children of the Wild series soon.  I’ll keep you posted on that.

So long for now

Watch Out!

Hi folks,

Recently I told you about trying and failing to write a self help book, and how I put the principals into two romance novels.  The first of which is Ten Day Turnaround.  Get a better look at it here:

look deeper here

Now we’re about to bring you the second of the two novels.  This one stirred up some controversy and ruffled a few feathers the first time I published it.  Yes we updated it, but I didn’t change the story.  Why not?  Here’s why.

I first wrote this story in the early years of this century to honor two couple of my acquaintance who have deliberately flown in the face of conventional thinking.  Couple number one is a man and woman who have been married many years, have children, several grandchildren, and perhaps even great grandchildren by now.  He is admittedly homosexual. But to avoid public censure, he married the girl from next door.  They dote on each other, love each other deeply, and he swears he has no regrets.

The second couple is two divorcees who were friends, one lesbian, and the other not.  They moved in together, became lovers, and are still together many years later.  Again, they love each other deeply.

Both couples asked for anonymity and I have respected that, opting instead to weave what they taught me into the story.  Please enjoy and know my only agenda in writing this was to honor these brave and heroic people.

Well, that’s it for this time.  Keep an eye out for Deliberate Love to appear for sale sometime next week.  (if the gods are willing)

I Messed Up

Hi folks,

Well, it appears that I’ve messed up.  Trust me, it’s not the first time.  What now?  Well, I’ve been informed by those who are supposed to know this stuff, that I’ve mislabeled the Children of the Goddess Series.  I’ve listed the series as fantasy/adventure, but I’m told that, in reality, the proper genre is Urban Fantasy.

Yeah, it really is a big deal.  I’ve got work to do.  So, if you’re wondering, here’s where this exciting urban fantasy begins.

Yes, I know, there are several other books of mine that should be listed as Urban Fantasy.  Like I said, I’ve got work to do.  sigh!

On another note, it’s the new year, so keep an eye out for new stuff plus new stories from romance to high urban adventure. 🙂

Turn it Around!

Hi folks,

I’ve written before about how I once attempted to write a self-help book, but failed to finish it.  It was boring to say the least.  However, I believed in what I had to offer, and I still do.  Back then I changed directions and put the information into a number of sweet romance stories, primarily two.  I present to you now the first of those two stories.

e-book

Go ahead, check it out, a good story and lots of other interesting stuff is just waiting for you.  All in time for the New Year’s resolutions. (tee hee)

Now, having said that, I hope to have the second of those two stories ready for you sometime in January, so keep an eye on this blog for updates.

Okay, now I have gifts to wrap, so, bye for now. 🙂

Birth of a story.

Hi folks,

I’ve been asked many times, “Where do you get your stories?”  The short answer is, I make them up.  That’s called writing fiction.  How do I make them up?  Okay, here’s an example, start with a character, then let them tell you their story.  This is how I came to write Hell Comes Home.

I’ll start with how I found the main character. Characters can come at you from anywhere, and they will if you let them. As a confirmed people watcher I often find in the people that pass me by. Here’s an example from one of my books.

A friend and I were on our way to the city. Once aboard the ferry boat she took off with her camera and I settled behind the wheel with a Stone Age laptop. (paper and pen) Once the boat was loaded I noticed a very attractive young woman beside our car. She was dressed in purple leathers and sitting astride a purple motorcycle. She looked rather pensive as she gazed out over the waters. For just a moment she looked like a super hero from the movies. I turned to a fresh page and began writing.

e-book

No, I didn’t start writing a story, no chapter one. I started with a quick physical description and a few notes on her mood, her attire, her motorcycle, etc. I then moved on to some possible reasons for her mood. Could have been anything, but the story sprang from those few things. No, I didn’t talk to her, didn’t want to know her name or anything about her. I write fiction. I can’t bring too much of a person into the character. That’s not fair to the real person nor is it fair to the reader. No, I have to let my imagination supply the rest. So, I went on with the day.

Later on that trip I saw a girl in Starbucks writing. She was writing poetry. Hmm, okay, I can use that. In the bookstore a graphic novel about a demon hunter caught my eye. The word demons went in my notes.

So now I need to know a bit about this girl. Who is she? What’s her life been like? There’s a news story about a teenage runaway. Okay, that will work. What else? Okay, from my head, she joined the military, special forces, black ops, becomes disillusioned, gets out to go home.

Now she’s real. She’s the heroine of my book Hell Comes Home, a story about a kick ass woman trying to make a place for herself in a world gone mad.

So, that’s it, folks and fans, that’s how a main character, and her story, is born in my world. This process may work for you, maybe not. Everybody works differently. The thing is, take a hard look at what works for you then find the strengths in that.

Best of luck in your reading / writing. Oh, and if there’s a topic you would like me to discuss, mention it in the comments. Feel free to ask questions too.
