How the Nova Series Began

Hi folks,

As promised, I will be posting about each book I’ve written, how, when, what inspired it, etc. Since we just launched Red Nova, I thought it would be fun to begin with the Novan Witch, first book in the series and the one that spawned the series.

The Nova witch began in two ways. First, I was in mourning at the loss of Firefly. How I do love those characters. With Star Trek gone and now Firefly I was at a loss for a good space opera. About the same time I became aware of NANOWRIMO. You know, the national write a 60,000 word novel in a month. Heck, I thought, I should be able to manage that. I had a week to get my head into it.

Okay, what did I need? Mankind had spread through the galaxy, so, that far in the future there would be no races of men, all would be blended long since so everybody has brown skin, brown eyes, and dark hair.

Now, at least two unique characters to start it off. How about a couple of throwbacks, a blonde and a full black girl. What else? Make one a powerful witch and the other way stronger than she thinks she is. Now for a bad guy. Okay, the black girl’s daddy is rich and a complete bastard.

For me, that was enough to start. I spent a few days daydreaming about the story until it was time to begin. I hit the 60K in three weeks. I won a free copy from Createspace and had it printed. I left it on the shelf for a couple of years, but it was always nagging at me. It was only a first draft, but it wanted more. Eventually I pulled it down, added some material, and finally published it in it’s current form. There are five books in the series now, but something tells me it’s not over yet. 🙂

As I said, I do love a good space opera, and eventually had to write my own. So, here she is.
